Deciding to Blog

When one becomes a father, a lot of emotions come to the surface.  Often times it can be scary going into this stage of your life but for those of us with amazing partners it can be a seamless experience.  Even with a great partner though who listens to your every word and does amazing things with your child, you find yourself wanting to see what other dads have to say.  You want to know that what you're feeling is ok, and in most cases, perfectly normal.  It was this search that led me to "dad blogs" and ultimately made me want to blog on my own.

What do I have to offer to the person who stumbles on my blog?  Not much.  I'm a new father with (at time of writing this) a 3 month old son and I'm still learning how to do this entire dad process.  I'm not a writer by trade and my writing skills are probably decent at best but I still want to document the world around me as I raise my son.  My goal in writing this blog is to keep a log of sorts of the changes Jack goes through and to put in words what I'm feeling.  I understand that writing only about a growing child could get a little stale so I'm combining this with my other love in live - no not my wife, the other other love, nerd/geek stuff.  Yes, I'm a nerd or a geek or whatever they call it these days.  I thoroughly enjoy video games, sci-fi, the X-Fiiles, technology, and whatever else fits that mold.  I'm fairly certain my son will be one too if forced to live in this  household.  So that is what I'm planning with this blog, to cover the growth of my son, the growth of my parenting and the techniques my wife and I use on a daily basis, and some nerdy culture thrown in for good measure.  I'll try to make them all  mix together as best as I can.

So, a little about myself.  My name is Scott and I'm from Baltimore, MD USA.  I live with my wife and son along with a big dog who thinks he is a lap dog and a neurotic cat who likes to eat plastic (much to the carpet's dismay.)  Jack was born on November 1st, 2013 and weighed in at 8 lbs. 3 oz.  My wife is breastfeeding only and it has not been an easy road.  From breast shields to tongue ties, we've seen it all, but it does look like we're coming out on top.  Jack is now a solid 14 lbs. 12 oz. at 3 mos. and he is perfectly healthy in all regards.  We just started cloth diapers as well, something my wife had to drag me into kicking and screaming - although the star wars designed diapers did help the cause.  We are also doing attachment parenting and like to wear our son a lot and my son sleeps in the bed with us next to my wife (co-sleeping.)  Also - we are vaccinating our son and I feel very strongly that the anti vaccine movement is dangerous.

So, that's my story.  I put that all in a paragraph to let you know some of the things I'll be covering in the coming days/weeks.  If you think you'd like to hear more about my attempts at parenting (I think I'm doing ok so far) then tune in and I hope I can interest you in some posts.  In the meantime, I'll try to think of enough topics to keep things fresh and interesting for future posts.
