Elevating The Season with Bulletproof Coffee #ElevateTheSeason

I tend to fancy myself a bit of a coffee fanatic. I drink multiple cups of coffee a day and I’m always on the lookout for a newer, better bean. It wasn’t always this way though. There was a time when I gagged at the taste of coffee and refused to drink it, no matter how much sugar was put in. That all changed when I met my wife in college and she took me to Starbucks for the first time. It was a slow go, but what started with macchiatos, morphed into french vanilla coffee, then regular coffee with cream and sugar, and finally to black which is how I drink my coffee now. I’m pretty happy with my black coffee and enjoy being able to try out a number of different types and qualities, all while exploring their tastes without added sugar. I was content in my little bubble of coffee enjoyment, but an offer came up – try Bulletproof Coffee and write about your experiences. To be honest, I didn’t know much about Bulletproof coffee outside of the fact that it was the coffee that adds in butter (ghee.) I respect coffees of all nationalities and creeds and I was always interested in what the benefits of Bulletproof coffee may be, so I figured why the heck not, and accepted the terms. By stepping out of my black coffee bubble, I was interested in what benefits I could gain from this new drink and if I would enjoy the taste. I am a snob when it comes to my black coffee after all.

The product I was sent was pretty robust, and at first a little overwhelming, but the instructions on the side of the coffee bag makes it very clear how to make a cup of Bulletproof coffee. The recipe on the bag tells you to…

  1.     Brew 1 cup (8-12 oz.) of coffee using filtered water, just off the boil, with 2 1/2 heaping tablespoons freshly ground Bulletproof Coffee Beans. (French Press is easiest.)

  2.     Add in 1-2 tablespoons of Brain Octane™ to the hot coffee (It’s STRONG – start with 1 tsp. and work up over several days).

  3.      Add 1-2 tablespoons grass-fed, unsalted butter or grass-fed ghee

  4.     Mix it all in a blender for 20-30 seconds until it is frothy like a foamy latte

That’s simple enough for me to follow. So with my freshly brewed coffee, I added in the provided grass fed ghee, threw in 1 tsp. of the brain octane, and then used a hand blender to mix it all together. Don’t make the mistake I did and use a small cup. You’ll be cleaning up a mess instead of enjoying your coffee. So, after making round two and using a larger cup this time, I mixed it all together with the hand blender for about 30 seconds. If you find your coffee isn’t creating a frothy top, keep blending for another 10 seconds or so. The end result looked a little something like this…

Ok, the coffee is made, the ghee is added, the brain octane is ready to…octane. The moment of truth. Taking my first sip of a non black coffee in a while. I lift the cup, take a sip and…hey, that’s pretty good. The first thing I noticed was that the taste was incredibly smooth. The ghee, brain octane, and coffee mixed together well to create an almost semi creamy liquid that tasted great. As I said earlier, I drink my coffee black, and this was perfectly fine in my eyes. I wanted to get another perspective though. What about someone who drinks their coffee with cream and sugar? Would the taste still work for them? Enter stage left, my wife. She took one drink and was immediately surprised by the taste. It was something she spent the next couple days drinking and actually took a very strong liking to it.

After drinking the coffee, the first thing I noticed was a little perk in my step. According to the Bulletproof website, this is the brain octane at work. You know what butter/ghee is, but what the heck is this brain octane that you’re adding to your drink? Well, for that, we’ll need science…

Brain Octane Oil is a purified form of medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil. MCTs have carbon tails that come in various lengths, from C-6 to C-12. The shorter the tail, the faster your body can absorb the MCT and convert it to ketones, little molecules that can fuel your brain instead of glucose. Brain Octane is pure C-8 MCT – it has 18 times the C-8 of coconut oil. Why not C-6, if your body processes it faster? C-6 tastes and smells terrible; C-8 is nearly tasteless and odorless, and you can still convert it to energy quickly, speeding up your metabolism and giving you a cognitive boost.

Pretty neat, huh? I found that the brain octane didn’t taste like anything. I started with 1 teaspoon and eventually made my way up to 2 and found that the energy boost in the morning was enough to keep me going through lunch. I drink a lot of coffee throughout the day though, so be sure to start with 1 teaspoon to make sure your body grows accustomed to the increased energy that the brain octane will give you. The brain octane helps give you a boost of  energy, but it also helps that Bulletproof Coffee as a whole is low toxin, high performance, and full of healthy fats to fuel you throughout your day. Not all coffees can make even one of these claims, but Bulletproof, with their unique formula, is able to count all three as selling points for their product.

Even if the ghee/brain octane mix isn’t for you, there is something to be said about the coffee that Bulletproof offers. I wanted to test out their beans black and compare it to the coffee I drink at work (typical Donut Shop coffee.) If you drink store bought coffee from a grocery store or a Target, you’ll immediately notice the quality difference in these beans. The coffee is incredibly smooth with no burnt aftertaste like a lot of mainstream coffees have these days. Even buying the coffee pre-ground, the taste was incredibly fresh and instantly became a top coffee for me. If the store bought coffees are a Denny’s dinner on a work night, these beans are a fine weekend steak dinner from that swanky joint downtown.

So, all in all, did I enjoy my experience with Bulletproof? I absolutely did. I was skeptical going in at first. Adding butter/ghee to a perfectly good black coffee sounds like blasphemy, but the taste was great and the benefits from it were measurable, at least from an energy standpoint.
